    Description

    Small 3-3/4" x 4" letter handwritten, signed and dated March 1, 1866 by Horace Maynard (died 1882). He was a Congressman from Tennessee from 1857-1863 and 1866-1875. An ardent Union supporter and later abolitionist, became one of the few Southern congressmen to maintain his seat in the House during the Civil War. He was later ambassador to Turkey under Grant and Postmaster General under Hayes.
